Philosophy of Education
I believe without a doubt that all children can learn. Every student in the classroom brings their own unique strengths, and at times some challenges. My goal as an educator is to meet each of my students where they are at, and to find innovative ways to create lifelong learners who find learning to be a joy and not a chore. My class embraces inquiry-based learning, which allows students to ask questions and provides guidance and tools to help students seek answers for themselves. This method of teaching allows students to embrace their creativity and to engage in the act of discovery. I use student-centered teaching techniques to draw connections in all of my lessons to my students' real life experiences. I teach my students to use schema by guiding them to make connections between what we are learning and their own lives and the world around them.
No two students are alike, and it is this diversity that brings joy and life to the classroom. While it brings joy, it also brings its own set of challenges. I meet this challenge by catering each of my lessons to a wide array of learning styles and intelligences. I differentiate my lessons to provide positive learning opportunities for my TAG, ELL, and Special Education students. I strive to create interdisciplinary lessons that allow my students the opportunity to learn about topics they are interested in while experiencing material from multiple subjects. Further, I believe that many students learn best when they are able to physically participate in their learning, and I provide a variety of hands-on, interactive lessons and utilize total physical response methods in the classroom to best engage bodily/kinesthetic learners. I enjoy teaching through class discussions, with an emphasis on critical thinking, listening skills, and oral language development.
My classroom is a space of collaboration and teamwork. I believe in a holistic style of learning, where the learners in my classroom not only receive academic support, but also have the opportunity to grow socially by working on collaborative projects and engaging in critical discussions with their peers. I provide my students with leadership opportunities in the classroom and encourage them to take ownership over their education. It is my greatest hope that my students will leave my classroom with a desire to be intellectually, socially, and environmentally engaged citizens. I set high expectations for my students and I provide them with the knowledge and support necessary for them to be successful.
